Spain: English-taught master's, living costs, and Schengen access

June 8, 2026 · 11 min

Spain is the third most popular study destination in Europe for international students by absolute numbers, yet it receives less attention in English-language study abroad media than Germany, the Netherlands, or Ireland. The reasons are partly structural: Spain’s English-taught programme count is lower than its northern neighbours, and its economy does not match the post-study employment dynamism of Germany or Ireland. But Spain’s value proposition — low living costs, wide cultural appeal, expanding English-taught options, and visa policies that have become more accommodating — is worth a detailed examination.

The Spanish university system

Spain has 84 universities: 50 public and 34 private. The public universities are the primary destination for international students seeking value. They are distributed across all autonomous communities, with the highest concentrations in Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Valencian Community.

The leading public universities for international students include: Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad de Barcelona, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad de Granada, and Universidad de Valencia.

Private business schools — particularly IE Business School, IESE, and ESADE — are globally ranked and offer predominantly English-taught programmes, but at significantly higher price points (€25,000–€75,000 for MBA programmes).

Tuition fees for non-EU students

Spanish public university tuition is set by each autonomous community within a framework established by the national government. For non-EU students without EU residency, fees are at the non-EU rate, which is typically higher than the EU rate but still moderate by international standards.
